I found this in the drafts on my blog. It is more about Grandma Hutton.
Grandma and Grandpa owned a cabin out at the rocks. We loved going there on the weekends. It was the first time I remember catching a fish. I had fished all day and everyone caught something but me. Dad came and got me and took me by the hand and told me that it sometimes rained fish. There was a mud puddle down the road and no one had been fishing in it. He baited my cane pole and took me to the puddle. You got it! I caught my first fish! Of course, Dad put it in the puddle, but I did not know that and my day was made! I fully believed it rained fish and told several people.
The road to get to the cabin was not in good shape at all. The road out there is the same as it was, at least last time I was out there a few years ago it was still as bad. It is very steep and full of ruts.
My brother, Jerry, said that it flooded out there a lot. One time he was spending the night with Grandma and fishing. It had flooded so much that they could not get to the car and the water was up to the cabin. They had known it was going to flood but did not realize it would be that bad so they moved the car up the road on the hill and therefore could not get to it. He said they stayed up all night watching. I guess my mom was having a fit wondering if they were okay because they could not get down there to them. Jerry spent lots of time with them fishing. They all loved it. My grandma really loved to fish. It was not a large, fancy cabin, but it served it’s purpose. I can still remember exactly what it looked like on the inside. It was so beautiful out there back in the day. All of the cabins were decorated with flowers and hanging baskets. Fond memories. People were so friendly to each other. It still floods out there!
There was a cave like thing that you could squeeze between and one you could sit under. Dad told us that Jesse James stayed out there. Of course, we believed him. Someone, perhaps dad, had carved the name “J. James”. Haha.
A few more things about Grandma that I remember is that she had a Bible stand the minute you walked in the front door. The Bible was on a doily and it was opened. I always stopped to see what page it was opened to. I cannot remember now whether it was changed or not, but I do remember that I always stopped to see.
She would come out to our house and take us in the woods and have us help her look for the ingredients for greens. The only one I can remember is that she said our house was the only place she could find dock. I wish I could remember all of the ingredients. We also would gather persimmons. Her pudding is still the only pudding that I have liked. I have the recipe, but she must have left some ingredient out of it because if just does not work. Haha. I will never admit that it might be me. The other thing is all of the violets she had all over the house. They were the best looking violets ever. She had the touch.
I sure miss her. I still remember the smell of the cabin and the smell of her house. Good memories!
