I was at mom’s house, I was probably living there, well she needed the antenna to the television turned. This is back in the old days. Haha. To get reception on the tv, you had to turn the antenna. There was a machine you could use to do this. She was just building a new house and the house did not have this machine yet.
The antenna had been on the ground and one would go outside and rotate it until someone inside yelled for you to stop. You would run back in and all could watch tv.
Well, the house was completed so the antenna was installed on the roof and not on the ground any longer but she had no machine yet.
She told me that if it were in this one particular spot, so many channels would come on and she would be set. She said she could not climb up there. Well, I bragged that I could climb! We laughed and got the ladder and up I went!
How stupid we were! Haha. Once I got up there, the antenna was still out of reach! The ladder I used to climb to the roof would not even be enough! I knew it was not smart to lean a ladder on a small pole and try to climb! So my valiant efforts were useless. We laughed and I went to the ladder to come down.
Well, I can climb, but apparently I cannot climb down! It looked so far to the ground. I could not turn around and step down that first rung! No matter what she said to encourage me, I could not do it.
She felt so sorry for me. She sat in a chair in the lawn and talked with me. We were waiting for anyone to come home and get me down. She went and got a glass of tea and brought it out. She laughed and said it bothered her that I could not have any. Ha. I told her that if it bothered her so much, to not drink it. We got tickled. If any one knows my mother and our family, we can laugh and laugh hard! Then I remembered, what if I needed a bathroom break?!! This made us laugh even more . It is much hotter on the roof, you know.
We were out there, her in a lawn chair and me on the roof for about two hours before someone came home. Brothers to the rescue!
Well, I did not sprint right down the ladder when they got there. I had to attempt to get down, then sit down and cry that I could not do it, get lectured by them, and repeat. Of course, they pointed out all sorts of the obvious reasons it would never work that way and how stupid to climb if you cannot get down. They did not buy my reasoning that I did not know that until I did climb.
Needless to say, I did get down as I am here. Sort of nice to have the television technology we have today, although those antenna days made for some good memories! If you experienced any such memories, please share them.
