This happened around 1998. We had just moved into town from the country. At that time, we were just a family of 5, us and 3 children. The home we purchased was from a wonderful woman whose son happened to be a pastor of a church just south of us. They kept inviting us and we decided to attend. There is a blog on this somewhere in here, but anyway, we loved it and became members.

Every Sunday morning they gave announcements. One of the announcements was about the board meeting. It was going to be Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. or something like that. Anyway, after a number of weeks visiting, we decided that they always announced that meeting, perhaps we should attend and be a part of everything. We had been to everything else, so why not.

Well, you should have seen their faces and reactions when showed up. They were perplexed, shocked, nervous, apprehensive and wondering what we doing there. We smiled and sat down. I can still remember the faces and reactions of each and everyone of them.

Thinking about them now is so comical. As I was writing this, I mentioned it to Wessie and he broke out into laughter and said he remembered it like yesterday. He described one persons actions and we laughed about it.

Pastor asked us what we were doing there. We said we thought we would come to the meeting. Of course, unknown to us, they thought we had a problem and this was not the way to attend a board meeting. Normally, you get a date and a time and the board will know what you want to meet for. So, they were all taken aback. We told them to go ahead with their business, we were good.

They sort of stuttered around and said well, you cannot be here for all of it. We said that is okay. They asked what we wanted to talk about and of course, there was nothing. They were so cautious they did not just want to blurt anything right out as we were a new family attending. The did not know us that well and did not want to hurt our feelings or scare us off. We said well, you kept announcing it and we felt like we should come and support the church. They sort of nodded, still nervously.

Finally, they had asked enough questions and explained enough that we understood that we were not supposed to be there. Finally, pastor told us this meeting was just for the board members. We then asked them why did they announce it in church as there were only 5 of them. Why not just tell them that morning or call them. Finally, when all understood, we all laughed and they were so relieved. I do not remember if he kept announcing it on Sunday mornings after that or if when he announced it, he made it clear that it was for the board members. We felt pretty silly after that.
